Field Activity Successfully Organized at ‘Model Apple Orchard’

The School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, University of Ladakh, provided its support

Under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) project, a field activity was successfully conducted today at the Model Apple Orchard, Himya (Rong Changthang) by KVK Nyoma in collaboration with School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SAST), University of Ladakh (UoL).
The programme was led by the Principal Investigators, Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, Head, KVK Nyoma, and Dr. Sonam Spaldon, Vegetable Scientist, SAST, University of Ladakh. The initiative witnessed active participation from local farmers and villagers of Himya Khatapoo, reflecting a strong community engagement towards horticultural development.
During the field visit, several key activities were carried out to enhance orchard management practices. Demonstrations on intercropping under low tunnel technology were conducted and implemented at the model orchard site to promote efficient utilization of space and resources. Additionally, gap filling of cold resistant apple cultivars was undertaken jointly by the KVK Nyoma team along with the local farmers, ensuring improved orchard productivity and sustainability.
To further support the farming community, essential inputs and training materials, including secateurs, pruning guidance, and mulch sheets, were distributed among the participating villagers. These inputs are expected to strengthen scientific orchard management practices in the region.
As part of the programme, lunch was also provided to the participants, fostering a spirit of cooperation and community participation.
The programme concluded on a positive and encouraging note, with Nambardar Thinley Angmo expressing her heartfelt gratitude to the Principal Investigators and the entire KVK Nyoma team for their dedicated efforts and continued support in advancing horticulture in the region.
